The Islamabad High Court’s Library was established in 2008 following Islamabad High Court (Establishment) Order, 2007 to cater for the needs of Honourable Judges of the High Court and the Court’s staff. The library was substantiated with an initial collection of 3000 books. However, with the rapid growth of knowledge, collection of library increased upto 12500 books till 2010. Presently, our library boasts collection of 18415 books, having the valuation of more than twenty (20) million rupees.
The library serves as an effective resource material for different subjects of law. The Library is continually updated with new books to abreast the Honourable Judges with new developments in law. The Library of Islamabad High Court provides digital resources and services as well as traditional services. The library is located in the basement of Chief Justice Block.
The Library material is purchased through a variety of sources from the local market and international booksellers. Statute books of different publishers and writers are part of library’s collection. Law books of other countries providing insight into legal framework of countries including India, England and USA are also part of the archives of Library.
Islamabad High Court’s library provides an extensive law related resources to support the Honourable Judges of High Court in their legal queries. The library has an extensive collection of both primary and secondary materials.
The library has subscription of monthly law journals and has complete series of all important Law Journals including PLD, SCMR, PCRLJ, MLD, PLC, YLR, CLD, PTD, CLC, PLJ, PSC, KLR, NLR, UC, AC, SCJ, TD, CRLJ, CLJ, SD, PTCL, PCTLR, CLR and SLR.
Foreign Law Journals / Books
The library has complete series of foreign law journals/ books namely All India Reporter (AIR), AIR manual, The Supreme Court Case (SCC) India, United States Supreme Court Reports, All England Law Reports (AELR), Halsbury’s Laws of England 4th and 5th edition, Halsbury’s Statutes of England& Wales 5th edition and Corpus Juris Secundum etc.
Library holds the reference sources namely; Encyclopedia Britannica, Words and phrases permanent edition in 132 volumes, Encyclopedia Pakistanica, Islamic Encyclopedia, Black’s Law dictionary, Legal Maxims, Feroz-ul-Lughat (Urdu), Qoumi Dictionary (Urdu), Oxford Dictionary, Oxford Advance Learner Dictionary and Medical Jurisprudence etc.
Our library has subscription of online legal databases i.e. Pakistan law site (Case law of Pakistani Superior Courts) and PLJ Law Site. The latest orders/ judgments are also accessible through IHC website.
Library Information And Management System
The library at IHC is installed with computers having electronic data base of library books. Library software namely LIMS (Library Information and Management System) is installed at Library for information and circulation of books.
Library has been equipped with all appliances necessary for functioning of a modern library, which are telephone, fax and photocopy facility etc.
Library of the High Court comprises of two officers along with other helping staff. The library is administered, organized and maintained by the Librarian with the help of Assistant Librarian, and other professional staff. The library staff also provides reference services to the Honourable Judges and also assists the Honourable Judges in chambers after Court hours.
